An awesome and beautiful city with vast expanse of rippling sand and scorching sun. It is situated on an elevated ground, surrounded by a seven-kilometer-long embattled wall marked by five gates. The city was founded by Rao Bika in 1488 and from its small origin it has developed into the fourth largest city in Rajasthan. Bikaner is now a trade centre for wool, hides, building stone, salt, and grain. Bikaneri woollen shawls, blankets, carpets and there are also ivory and lacquer ware handicrafts, Bikaneri Bhujia and Papad (a spicy snack made from moth dal, spices and edible oil) and its sweets, “Usta Art” (centuries old technique is characterized by miniature paintings and gold embossing) and intricately carved Jharokas are the main attractions, which have highlighted this city at world map. The real Bikaneri culture is its religious, harmonious and satisfactory inheritance which is generated from Laxminathji temple, Nagnechiji temple, Shri Karnimata temple (World famous mouse temple), Shri Kolayatji and more than 100 temples.
Government Dungar College, Bikaner in its nascent state was called ” The Darbar School “, started in 1837. Thereafter, then ruler of Bikaner State, Maharaja Ganga Singh ji elevated The Darbar School to Dungar Memorial College on 25 September, 1912. In July, 1940 intermediate Science Faculty started with Physics and Chemistry teaching and in 1942 degree level teaching was started. In 1962, the college shifted to its present-building. The P.G teaching in Chemistry and Physics was started in 1968. Today this college is one of the premier institute of Rajasthan, where 22 subjects are being taught at degree level, 18 at post graduate level, 6 at M.Phil level and Research work is being carried out for Ph.D. Degrees in all the P.G. departments. The college has been accredited as A-Grade by NAAC-UGC in consecutive two cycles (i.e. in 2006 and 2014) and also stated as Torch bearer of rajasthan.
About Chemistry Department
Chemistry department is one of the biggest departments not only of Government Dungar College, Bikaner but of Rajasthan as well, with 30000 square feet area. It has seven big laboratories, four for undergraduate students, two for post graduate students and one for M.Phil students, in addition to it seven research laboratories are also there. The department is enriched by different funds like FIST-DST, BRNS, UGC, RUSA etc. and developed GCRC (Green Chemistry Research Center) and FIST-DST developed SIL (Sophisticated Instruments Laboratory). At present 1060 undergraduate students, 40 post graduate students and 20 M.Phil. students are enrolled. So far 50 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree from the department and 20 scholars are pursuing for Ph.D. The department has developed innovative learning strategies in recent past like – Publication of first e-magazine Chemlore for students, Production of science films for the skill devolvement of students; and organized training workshops
particularly in the field of Food and Drug Analysis. The department has been pioneer to develop e-contents and e-learning contents in higher education and at other levels. Major instruments / facilities available in the department are – FTIR, Double Beam UV VIS spectrophotometer, Digital Balance, GMB Reactor, Spectrophotometers, Polarimeter, Refractometer, Chromatographic analyzer TLC, CC and PC, Flame photometer, Electrophoresis, Autoclave, Muffle furnace, Radio-pH meter, Autotitrator, Inert Gas Potentiostate etc. In the last year department has designed Laboratory waste water neutralization Plant, an effort to make Green
Green Chemistry Network Centre (GCNC) was established in the Department of Chemistry,University of Delhi under the recommendation of World Leaders in Green Chemistry headed by Professor Paul Anastas (known as the father of Green Chemistry) with the following aims and objectives :
Build a Network for exchange of expertise, discussion and knowledge between industrialists and academics and between chemists and engineers with interests and expertise relevant to Green Chemistry.
Prepare and disseminate the teaching materials on Green Chemistry for school, college and university levels, with the simultaneous design of laboratory experiments for these levels as well.
Design trainings not just to expose the chemists to the concepts, principles and methodologies of Green Chemistry but also to empower them to bring this new knowledge back to their institution or industries.
Promoting research by taking up Green Chemistry Research Projects from Industry and Government agencies.
Since its inception, this network centre has been working enormously for the development of Green chemistry particularly in India, under the flagship of Prof. R.K. Sharma (Coordinator, GCNC) who has not only contributed by coordinating with various institutions for popularizing Green chemistry but also developed various technologies by virtue of performing research in this
field. In the mission of spreading awareness of Green Chemistry across India, GCNC has been actively involved in organizing workshops and conferences of both national as well as international stature on crucial issues related to Green Chemistry and Sustainable Development every year. For Green Chemistry Networking in India, GCNC even received prestigious IUPAC CHEMRAWN GCI-DEN Grant Award.
Improvement the quality of water has also been one of the prime objectives of this network center and thus within this context Prof. Sharma along with his enthusiastic team members of GCNC have developed sustainable and socio-economic solutions for the problems associated with metal contaminated wastewater. Apart from this, GCNC has also been involved in designing novel organic-inorganic hybrid catalysts for expediting industrially significant organic transformations that lead to the synthesis of bioactive compounds showing antitumour, anticancer and antiblastic activities.
Royal Society of chemistry London is one of the most prestigious organization in chemical science. RSC London North India Section which is one of the local sections of RSC one of the organizer and funding agency of this event. Over the years, it has been rendering financial support to the chemical scientists and researchers for organizing conferences, workshops, symposium, lectures and other popular scientific events.
About the Workshop & Symposium
The workshop and symposium will be addressed by the eminent professors and scientists working in the field of chemical and allied sciences. The motive of workshop is competence building among students and to encourage them for scientific research.
For this purpose three way approach will be used :
1. Special Lectures by subject experts and resource persons.
2. Oral and poster presentations by researchers and students.
3. Hands on training to develop experimental skill viz a viz complete session for e-poster and science videos presentations by participants will be the attraction.
